The story of beachBUB® began in 2009 after founder Bill Schermerhorn witnessed a stray beach umbrella launched by a sudden gust of wind injure a young girl. Driven to prevent similar beachside accidents, Schermerhorn looked to patio umbrellas for inspiration. Patio umbrellas stay rooted because of their heavy, weighted bases—a solution impractical to carry to the shore. His genius workaround was simple: design a lightweight, ultra-portable base that uses the beach’s natural resource—sand—to provide the weight. Unfilled, the base weighs under half a pound and folds down to the size of a paperback book; once filled with beach sand, it creates a rock-solid, 125-pound anchor in under two minutes.
